SHTEM (Summer Internships for High Schoolers at Stanford University) - 10 Reasons Why It’s Worth it

As a high school student, building a strong academic profile is crucial. However, it involves more than just achieving high test scores. Unique experiences that push you out of your comfort zone are essential. One effective way to enhance your profile is by attending pre-college programs that offer college-level coursework and hands-on experiences.

These programs can significantly enhance your college applications. This article will explore the SHTEM: Summer Internships for High Schoolers at Stanford University. We'll discuss its structure, evaluate its prestige, and provide ten reasons why you should apply.

What is SHTEM?

The Summer Internships for High Schoolers and Community College Students at Stanford University is a prestigious program that offers students the chance to participate in research and practical projects across science, humanities, technology, engineering, and mathematics (SHTEM).

Hosted by the Stanford Compression Forum, this internship allows students to experience research early on and explore the connections between humanities and STEM fields. Participants will complete a research project from beginning to end, guided by mentors from Stanford.

What are some basic details of the program?

Here are some of the basic details about these internships like, eligibility, cost, location, deadline etc.

Location: The 2024 program will be entirely virtual.

How is SHTEM structured?

As an intern, you will dedicate eight weeks to a research project that often involves multiple disciplines such as engineering, linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and technology. You will be mentored by Stanford students and faculty, working in groups of 2-5 students.

You are expected to spend 30-40 hours per week on remote research. If physical materials are needed, they will be provided to you. Past interns have worked on projects like evaluating the effectiveness of virtual reality in surgeries, exploring the intersection of astronomy and art, and studying ways to close the gender gap in engineering.

Is SHTEM Prestigious?

Yes, SHTEM is highly prestigious. Being part of a program hosted by Stanford University inherently carries a level of recognition and respect.

The high level of research involved makes it even more so. Further, the internship is fairly competitive and accepts only about 60 students across all applications. Even getting into the program counts as an achievement.
