What is NYSCamp?

The NYSCamp, organized by the National Youth Science Academy, is a prestigious three-week residential program designed for outstanding high school students passionate about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM). Since its inception in 1963 and located in the picturesque Monongahela National Forest of West Virginia, NYSCamp strives to offer a comprehensive educational experience that goes beyond traditional classroom learning.

Participants have the unique opportunity to interact with renowned professionals, participate in hands-on activities, and enjoy outdoor pursuits aimed at personal growth and development, ensuring a holistic and enriching experience.

The National Youth Science Academy, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to fostering lifelong engagement and ethical leadership in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and related fields. It achieves this mission through specialized STEM programs designed for students nationwide, with the NYSCamp serving as its premier initiative.

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be candidates for high school graduation between select time frames each year.

• Must demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in mathematics and/or the sciences;

• Must demonstrate an application of leadership abilities and social maturity through involvement in both school and community activities;

• Must demonstrate skills and achievements outside the realm of science and outside the realm of academic pursuits; and

• Must demonstrate a curiosity and an eagerness to explore many and varied topics.

How does the application process work? 

To apply for NYSCamp, the process involves being nominated by the state you reside in. For students from Florida, Georgia, and Massachusetts, nomination occurs through their state science fairs. Residents of the other 47 states need to complete an application which includes several components:

Letter of Application: This should articulate why you wish to attend NYSCamp, how you qualify to represent your state, how the camp will benefit you, and your thoughts on the societal implications of science.

High School Transcript: A copy of your most recent transcript is required.

Resume: Include details such as work experience, volunteer activities, leadership roles, awards, honors, and extracurricular involvement.

Letter of Recommendation: Provide the name and email of a recommender who will submit a letter on your behalf.

Additionally, you'll need to supply your current cumulative high school GPA and specify the STEAM, Honors, and AP classes you are enrolled in.

How much does NYSCamp cost?

The best part of NYSCamp is that it's completely free for all applicants, both national and international. The camp is fully funded and all-inclusive.

How is NYSCamp structured?

NYSCamp 2024 will run from June 29 to July 20. Please check back in December 2024 or January 2025 to learn more about the 2025 National Youth Science Camp.

A typical day includes various outdoor physical activities and eight hours of lectures, seminars, or directed work.

Expect to attend lectures and workshops by top STEAM experts like Neil deGrasse Tyson (astrophysicist), Neil Armstrong (astronaut), Marissa Mayer (former Yahoo! CEO), and Julie Robinson (Chief Scientist, NASA). You'll also engage in hands-on projects and research opportunities. Additionally, there are outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking, as well as artistic and creative sessions.

How is NYSCamp structured?

NYSCamp is one of the most prestigious STEM programs in the country. It is highly selective, admitting only 100 delegates from 50 states plus international delegates. If selected, you represent your state or country.

The program offers the chance to interact with and learn from notable alumni like mathematician and Nobel laureate John Nash, and Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project and director of the NIH. NYSCamp provides a holistic learning experience with dense lectures from industry experts, practical directed studies, and an outdoor adventure and arts program.

The success of this approach is evident: over 50% of NYSCamp alumni earn a doctorate, more than 85% work in a STEM field, and over 99% obtain at least a bachelor’s degree.

Pros and Cons of attending NYSCamp

Pros:

Intense and Demanding Schedule: The program requires a full-time commitment for three weeks, which can be demanding.

Residential Only: Participation requires traveling to and residing at NYSCamp, so if you cannot attend in person, you won't be able to participate.
