The Reach Cambridge Program - Should You Apply?

If you're a high school student aiming for competitive universities, having a prestigious pre-college program on your profile can significantly boost your application. These programs offer the chance to explore your academic interests, gain new skills, and experience life on a college campus.

One such program is the Reach Cambridge Program, which, though independent of the University of Cambridge, offers a valuable and immersive learning experience. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at what the Reach Cambridge Program entails and whether it's worth applying for.

What is the Reach Cambridge Program?

The Reach Cambridge Program is a residential summer program based in the historic city of Cambridge, UK, offering high school students an opportunity to study in one of the world’s most renowned academic cities. The program offers two-, four- and six-week courses covering a wide range of subjects such as STEM, engineering, global leadership, computer science, law, and many more. You will gain insights from faculty members with experience from top institutions like Cambridge and Oxford while immersing yourself in a university-style learning environment.

Aside from academics, the program places significant emphasis on personal development and networking, allowing students to build lasting relationships with peers from around the world.

How is the Reach Program structured?

Each of the Reach programs offers at least 20 hours of academic tuition per week, with the schedule including guest lectures, practical workshops, and city excursions. An average day in the program involves morning classes, followed by group projects or excursions in the afternoon. For many of the courses, you will be responsible for completing a final project or presentation at the end of the program, reflecting the skills you have gained.

Some examples of the programs offered:

  • Engineering: This course focuses on real-world applications of engineering principles. You will explore mechanics, materials science, and energy systems through practical workshops and theoretical lessons. The goal is to develop problem-solving skills and provide insight into future engineering degrees.

  • Computer Science: Covering both fundamental theory and hands-on practice, this program gives you the chance to learn coding, data science, and AI. It’s a solid foundation for anyone interested in the fast-growing tech industry.

  • STEM: Aimed at students with a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math, this course allows you to work on interdisciplinary projects, engage in experiments, and learn how scientific discoveries are made.

Other programs include: Medicine & Life Sciences, Law, Psychology, Business Management & Economics, Politics & International Relations, English Literature & Creative Writing, Journalism & Media, and more.

There are three types of programs available, in the following batches:

Is it prestigious?

While the Reach Cambridge Program is not officially affiliated with the University of Cambridge, it is known for delivering a high-quality academic experience. The supervisory department is made up mainly of Cambridge University students, and the faculty includes Fellows, Professors, researchers, post-graduates, and specialists working or studying at high-level academic institutions such as Cambridge, Oxford, or London universities. However, the program is not highly selective, and the cost may deter some applicants. Still, the program offers access to a global network of peers as well as notable guest lecturers and professors, allowing you to build relationships that can last beyond the summer. And of course, the opportunity to study in a city like Cambridge, surrounded by capable educators and historic institutions, makes this a solid addition to any college application.

Who is eligible and how do you apply?

The eligibility criteria for Reach Cambridge are quite simple:

  • Students aged 14-18

  • Good academic standing

  • Proficient in English

  • Interest in the subject of study

The application process simply requires a personal statement wherein you need to provide:

  1. Your motivation and objectives in attending the program, and

  2. Your academic background and aspirations for the future.

Applications are currently open, and you will get a £650 discount on applying before 15th September.

How much do Reach Cambridge programs cost?

The fees for the Reach Cambridge Program vary by session length:

  • 2-week program: £5,645

  • 4-week program: £11,745

  • 6-week program: £17,845

Pros and cons to consider

Pros:

  1. Good opportunity for academic growth: You will be challenged with university-level material and an in-depth look at your field of choice, giving you a head start in your future studies.

  2. Great networking opportunities: Since the program is international, you will get to meet students from all over the world, fostering a diverse and enriching experience.

  3. Experienced faculty: Courses are taught by qualified professionals with rich experience across various prestigious institutions, providing you with high-quality instruction.

Cons:

  1. The cost is quite high: The program can be very expensive, with even the cheapest course being well over £5,000. This is further exacerbated by the lack of financial aid.

  2. Not actually run by Cambridge University: Reach Cambridge is a private company, and while the faculty are knowledgeable and skilled and the programs are located in Cambridge city, its association with Cambridge University is tenuous at best.

Should you apply?

The Reach Cambridge Program offers a valuable opportunity for academic enrichment, personal growth, and cultural exposure. If you're interested in experiencing life in a historic academic city while engaging with university-level content, it could be a great fit. However, the program's high cost and independent status from the University of Cambridge may cause some students to pause. Ultimately, if you can afford it and want an immersive summer learning experience, it’s worth considering.
