What is the RoboRave challenge?
RoboRAVE is an international robotics competition founded in New Mexico in 2001, and it has evolved into a global event, spanning countries such as Mexico, China, the Czech Republic, and more. The competition aims to encourage students of all ages to explore the field of robotics, fostering a sense of enjoyment while honing their engineering abilities.
RoboRAVE competitions are known for their challenging and diverse set of events, encompassing everything from line-following robots to autonomous aerial vehicles. Participants engage in designing, building, and programming their robots to complete specific tasks within given time limits. The competition places a strong emphasis on the development of technical skills, including coding, circuit design, mechanical engineering, and problem-solving. RoboRAVE has gained prestige within the robotics community due to its high standards, rigorous judging criteria, and the invaluable opportunity it provides for participants to showcase their talents on a global stage.
Is the RoboRAVE challenge prestigious?
The RoboRAVE challenge is prestigious. Over the past five years, the competition has experienced a consistent annual increase in participation, with a notable 20% rise in team registrations worldwide. Noteworthy is the extensive network of over 200 educational institutions, 150 industry professionals, and sponsors such as tech giants like Microsoft, Intel, and Autodesk, actively supporting and participating in RoboRAVE. This collaboration enhances the competition's standing and provides a unique platform for participants to connect with industry leaders and benefit from the expertise of these influential sponsors.
How does the competition work?
RoboRave is a decentralized competition, where each country determines the format, rankings, challenges, times, and locations.
At the start of each year, local RoboRave events unveil challenges that span 4-8 different categories. These challenges encompass diverse games such as "Line-Following," testing a robot's ability to navigate a complex track without falling off, or competitive duels like "SumoBot," where two robots engage in a ring until one is displaced. Additionally, challenges like "InnovBot" leave room for innovation, only requiring teams to build a robot with a creative design or purpose. There are also non-engineering challenges like "RoboEthics," where teams submit presentations or papers on the future of robotics and ethical guidelines.
RoboRave embraces an open-source ethos, permitting teams to use any materials, programs, or software. However, there are often design constraints such as size or weight, and certain software that undermines the core challenge and may be prohibited.
What are the prizes?
The prizes for winning the RoboRAVE challenge vary by region and event, but commonly, winning teams are awarded trophies, medals, and certificates. Additionally, sponsors of the RoboRAVE challenge frequently contribute prizes that may include cutting-edge robotics kits, electronic components, or even scholarships for further education in STEM fields.

Who is eligible?
The RoboRAVE challenge welcomes participants from a diverse range of backgrounds and age groups. The age groups typically include elementary (ages 8-10), middle (ages 11-13), high (ages 14-18), and big kids (ages 19 and above). Teams, composed of 2 to 4 individuals, collaborate under the guidance of a coach to navigate the challenges posed by the competition. The team's age category is determined by the oldest member.
Application process and timeline
There are no qualifying competitions so teams can register for any competition at any time. Simply have your coach register your team here and sign up for a competition. The dates for each competition vary.
