Should You Apply to International Summer School for Young Physicists?

ISSYP is a moderately to highly prestigious program. With its competitive selection process, the detailed eligibility criteria and comprehensive application process indicate that this program seeks highly valuable students. Although there is a price point attached at 250 CAD ($181 USD), the moderately priced program, in comparison to a range of other college preparatory programs, adds to the prestige and selectivity. 


What is the Structure?


The program spans two weeks of intensive online activities structured to maximize learning and engagement. A detailed schedule is typically provided in the acceptance package to accepted students. However, the general program will run for two weeks with ninety-minute online sessions twice per weekday(making it 3 hours total), expected one hour of preparatory work, two to three hours of independent work on the weekend, and a range of mini-courses plus keynote speakers that students can engage with.  


These mini-courses provide a conceptual introduction to key ideas in modern physics, supported by background reading, sample problems, and recorded lectures. Interactive online sessions include ninety-minute live sessions held twice weekly, featuring instructor-led content, Q&A, and group work. Students are often sent home to conduct simple experiments to reinforce theoretical concepts. Talks by Perimeter Institute researchers on cutting-edge topics in theoretical physics will occur, and discussions will be held with ISSYP alumni and researchers about academic and professional paths in physics.

What is the Timeline and Application Process?


The current application cycle for the 2024 program has been put on pause. 


However, in years past, the timeline for applications open on December 1st the year prior and the deadline in 2023 was on March 16 at 11:59 PM EDT

What are the Eligibility Requirements?


To be considered for the ISSYP, applicants must demonstrate a strong passion and aptitude for physics and mathematics based on their high school grades and involvement in related extracurricular activities. Applicants should also have plans to study physics at the university level. Eligible students must be in the final two years of secondary school (equivalent to Grade 11 or 12 in Canada or first-year CEGEP) at the time of application. They must have completed Grade 11 physics (or its international equivalent) by the start of the program. Proficiency in English is required, as the program is conducted entirely in English.


Are there any exceptions?


Yes!


Students currently in Grade 10 who will have completed Grade 11 physics by July are eligible to apply. Those who have not completed the necessary physics coursework are encouraged to use in future years once they meet the requirements. Students who graduated high school in 2022 and are on an unplanned gap year due to the pandemic can also apply. However, students who have begun or will begin full-time university or college courses before July 2023 are not eligible.


What about International Applicants?


The ISSYP is open to students worldwide who meet the eligibility criteria. International applicants should note that the program's daily schedule (approximately 10 am-4 pm ET) may not align with their local time zones, and they should consider this time difference before applying. Detailed schedules will be provided in acceptance packages.


What are the associated costs?


As mentioned earlier, the program is  $250 CAD (payable upon acceptance) or $181 USD
