Everything You Need to Know About the Student Science Training Program

What is the Student Science Training Program?

The University of Florida's Student Science Training Program (UF SSTP) is a 7-week residential research program where students work alongside university faculty and researchers on cutting-edge projects across various scientific disciplines. 


Projects are typically in the fields of science, medicine, math, computer science, or engineering and apart from your research, you will be engaged in lecture series and honours seminars. 


Is it prestigious?

Yes, the UF SSTP is highly prestigious. It is known for its competitive selection process, attracting top-tier students nationwide. The program's acceptance rate is relatively low, reflecting its rigorous standards and the high level of interest from prospective students. Although the exact acceptance rate is not publicly disclosed, the program is considered one of the most competitive of its kind.


What is the structure?

The UF SSTP is structured as a seven-week residential program, providing students with an immersive experience in scientific research and academic growth. Upon acceptance, students are placed in a research lab that aligns with their specific interests and work closely with a mentor on a designated research project. 


Apart from the research, participants attend educational sessions through lectures and seminars covering various scientific topics and research methodologies. Moreover, skill-building workshops are a crucial part of the program, focusing on scientific writing, data analysis, and presentation techniques.

What is the application process?

To apply for the UF SSTP, students must create an account on the online application portal at www.ufcpet.smapply.us. The application includes several components that must all be submitted online unless stated otherwise. After completing all sections, the student must log in and submit the application.

The application consists of:

  • User Information

  • Application Form: This includes additional information about the student’s involvement and responses to two writing prompts, each limited to 500 words.

    • Prompt 1: Describe your interest in a specific STEM field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science).

    • Prompt 2: Where do you see yourself academically and professionally in 10 years, and how do you plan to achieve these goals?

  • Teacher Endorsement Forms

  • Academic Record Form

  • Official High School Transcript

  • Application Fee: A $50 application fee must be paid, unless the student qualifies for a fee waiver due to attending a Florida high school and meeting certain financial criteria.

Offline Tasks: Students must acknowledge these tasks in the application portal and ensure they are logged by the CPET office. Once logged, students can mark these sections as complete online. Only after all sections are complete can the full application be submitted.


What are the important dates and costs?

Here are all the dates that you need to keep in mind for this program (do keep in mind these are the dates for 2024 and those for future editions will be on similar lines):

Applications Close: May 1, 2024

Program Starts: July 9, 2024

Program Ends: July 27, 2024


Cost: The program fee is approximately $5,250, which covers tuition, housing, meals, and all program activities. Financial aid and scholarships are available for eligible students to help offset the cost.
