What is SPARK SIP?

SPARK SIP, or the SPARK Summer Internship Program, is a special initiative designed to connect academically motivated high schoolers with industry experts, university professors, and mentors, collaborating with them on cutting-edge research projects. SPARK SIP was created with a mission to provide deep learning and hands-on experience, primarily serving students in the Greater Seattle area but welcoming eligible applicants from across the USA. This internship program covers various STEM fields, giving you the chance to tackle real-world projects and learn directly from professionals. As an intern, you'll gain essential skills and valuable insights into the world of professional research, setting you up for success in your future studies and possibly a career in scientific research.

Who is eligible to apply?

To be eligible for SPARK SIP, you must meet the following criteria:

• You must be a high school student in grades 9-12 during the current school year. Keep in mind that each internship project may have slightly different requirements, so be sure to check before applying!

• You must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. Unfortunately, the program is not open to international students.

• You must be committed to fully participating in a residential internship at the location specified by the sponsor. This may involve additional expenses beyond the program fees.

How does the application process work?

The application process typically kicks off in March. Here's what you'll need to provide:

• Your basic applicant information.

• An essay responding to a set of provided questions. Note that you will need to submit one essay for every project you apply for, and you can apply for 1-5 projects simultaneously. You must mention your project preferences in your application.

• Your most recent resume, ideally tailored to the project(s) you're applying for.

• Your high school transcript with the school seal and your name.

• A COVID vaccination certificate, which is mandatory for in-person internships.

• The application fee of $25 (based on the 2023 application). This fee remains fixed regardless of how many projects you're applying to.

While the applications for the 2024 cohort have closed, you should keep an eye on the SPARK website for updates to the 2025 application.

Applications are typically closed and reviewed in April by the project sponsors, and you can expect interview invitations by May. If selected, you'll embark on an 8 to 10-week internship from June to August.

How is SPARK SIP structured?

SPARK operates as a non-profit, inviting businesses and institutions to sponsor internships through their platform and matching them with students like you. These projects cover a wide range of fields and research topics. Research topics for 2024 include extreme weather conditions, software engineering, detecting tick-borne infections and cancers, ML workflow, quantum, CHIPS/semiconductors - GaN/AIGaN, low-temperature electronics, competitive analysis, and market research, data engineering and AI, social media content generation, and more.

You could find yourself working with organizations as diverse as the IEEE Nanotechnology Council at the University of Washington, West Virginia University's Grid Operation Lab, or even participating in an offshore internship in Chennai, India! There are a few remote internship opportunities available for you in 2024 as well. Each internship is unique, but you can expect to work anywhere from 20 to 40 hours per week for 8-10 weeks. Regardless of the project type, you'll collaborate directly with researchers, scientists, and professionals, making meaningful contributions to their work while learning the ins and outs of your chosen field.

While some internships may be unpaid, others offer stipends of up to $500.
