Message from our Program Director, Tyler Moulton
I was given a dataset with 10,000 stars and too many variables to count! I was overwhelmed, but lucky; my mentor, a data science savant and senior research at Cambridge, guided me towards mastering AI and leveraging to classify stellar types in the Orion Nebula. With his help, I was able to master the fundamentals of machine learning and first author my first research publication at the intersection of astronomy and AI!
I joined the Veritas AI team my experience tells me how incredibly formative a program ours can be in a young scholar’s development. AI might be a difficult field to access, but with the right curriculum, mentor, and overall support system, I believe any high school student can master the fundamentals of AI!
I myself have now worked with several of our astronomy students on AI projects (hazardous asteroid classification, anyone?), and get so excited at the different projects our mentors and students undertake together. From medicine and finance to art generation and literary analysis, I’ve seen AI applied across every field of study. Even more exciting, I’ve seen so many high schoolers empowered in their newfound mastery and impactful application of artificial intelligence.
Attending a small public high school, my school didn’t offer courses in computer science… let alone data science of Artificial Intelligence. By the time I reached my junior year at Harvard, I had only taken one course in computer science and felt that AI would be beyond my skillset. After all, only geniuses get to build AI software!
The summer after my junior year, I was lucky enough to attend Trinity College, University of Cambridge as a research fellow at the Institute of Astronomy. It was my first research experience, and I didn’t realize until my first day at the IoA just how data-driven scientific fields like astronomy truly are!

Letter from our Program Director, Tyler Moulton
My small public high school didn’t offer courses in computer science, much less artificial intelligence. So, by the time I reached my junior year at Harvard as an undergraduate, I had only taken one course in computer science and felt that AI was beyond my skillset. Then, a summer in Cambridge using AI and Astronomy changed my trajectory.
The summer after my junior year, I was lucky enough to work at the University of Cambridge as a research fellow at the Institute of Astronomy. It was my first research experience, and I didn’t realize until my first day at Cambridge just how much data was in Astronomy!
I was given a dataset with 10,000 stars and too many variables to count. I was overwhelmed, but luckily, my mentor, a data science and astronomy researcher at Cambridge, helped me learn AI and leverage it to classify stellar types in the Orion Nebula. With his help, I wrote my first research publication at the intersection of astronomy and AI!
I joined the Veritas AI team because I’ve experienced firsthand how learning about AI can change a young scholar’s trajectory. AI might feel difficult for many students, but with the right curriculum, mentor, and support system, I believe any high school student can master the fundamentals of AI! That’s our mission.
I have worked with several of our students on AI projects (hazardous asteroid classification, anyone?), and get so excited at the different projects our mentors and students undertake together. From medicine and finance to art generation and literary analysis, I’ve seen AI applied across every field of study. I’m so excited to help students explore the world of AI - just like my mentor showed me! I hope you’ll join us.
Yours,
Tyler Moulton
